So I hate to say it, but your so called "amazing video" is boring me and probably is others as well. We sometimes think that what we put out there is AMAZINGLY GOOD and that we nailed it, when in all actuality, we did not! I'm not saying I have it all together or am "the expert", but I will say that I am creative, have an eye for details, and have done video and video related things for awhile and have gotten even more into it as of late.
I always love to see when people post videos whether it be daily, weekly you name it I love watching if it's good. I grab my coffee, plop by feet up, snuggle in close to my screen, place the cursor over the play button and press play while sipping. I see that this is going to be what looks like an amazing video.
HOLD ON!!! WHAT!!!!! Your video is over 10 minutes long!!! Yeah, I'm going to move onto the next one sorry, you may get me to watch next time! You see folks, when you do a video, even if it's your first time, you have about 5-10 seconds to grab someones attention and to keep them dialed in. It doesn't matter how good your info is, tips, tricks are etc, if your video is longer than 3 minutes tops, you are going to lose viewers that's it, done.
Now you may say, "that's super harsh, people tell me they love watching my videos and that my info is relevant and honest. Well, I would tell you, your friends are being too nice. Yes, you may have great info, may be relevant you name it, but others it could come off as rambling, not put together and way too freaking long! I don't care if you're great speaker, leave that for a conference or live viewer webcast. FYI those are awesome!
So you may ask, okay, how do I make my videos better?
Here Are The 5 Things That Will Bring Your Videos From Boring, To Extraordinary!
1.) Editing. Video editing software is your friend so please for the love of God use it! It's okay to chop out great parts, because they may not be that great in the end or convey what your message is really about. So go ahead... Ctrl z and delete it! Also, don't be afraid to add crossfades or cool transition effects if you are going between interviews to city shots etc.
2.) Information. Nobody likes to hear anyone ramble on and on about what they just touched on 2 seconds ago. Make sure you have what you want to say down
(Again, editing is your friend use it)
3.) Lighting. It doesn't matter if you use your MacBook Pro, PC, laptop, iPhone or smartphone, etc., make sure you have some good lighting hitting you. Nobody likes to see a video where the person looks too dark or to red/yellow. Windows are great, or even a nice Ikea desk lap shinning on you. Ikea has some great lamps you can use a DIY video lighting system.
4.) Angles. So many videos I see, the person is either looking down too much, looking to straight on, or just simply has no clue what they are doing or going for. A slight angle of your laptop, camera, etc., will make your videos look more professional. If you're doing a promo video or something other than a live feed, side profile videos are great. Look at Apple interviews the look awesome!
5.) Get To The Freaking Point! That means what it you think it means and kinda goes with tip number 1 and 2. You want the viewer to watch your video in the first 5 seconds and say, WOW the quality looks great, has some good information and I want to know more. BAM! That's it!
All in all If your video's are too long, the reality is, that in the future when you post more videos nobody will want to snuggle up on the couch and watch and listen.
I hope you found these tips useful as I've learned over the years in recording videos, doing my own videos, etc., that the simpler it is with a little planning, it can turn out to be an amazing thing that keeps progressing over time and leaves your viewers wanting more.
